Army dominate triathlon

Kathmandu, November 7

Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) dominated the fourth National Triathlon Championship held under seventh National Games, at the Begnas Lake in Kaski on Saturday.

TAC won four golds, three silvers and two bronze medals in the one-day tournament. In standard category, Rudra Katuwal of TAC completed 1,500m race, 40km cycling and 10km running in two hours, 29 minutes and six seconds to finish first. Tika Ram Thapa of TAC finished second and Ramesh Kumar Darlami of APF finished in the third position.

In sprint section that included 750m swimming, 20km cycling and 5km running, Basant Tharu of TAC won gold with the timing of 1:15:28, finishing ahead of his teammate Himal Tamatta and APF’s Aasnarayan Chaudhary.

In women’s sprint category, Keshari Thapa Magar of TAC won gold, while Roja KC of Central Region and Yam Kumari Ghale of TAC won silver and bronze medals respectively.

In Duathlon competition of 5km running and 20km cycling and 2.5km running, Man Bahadur Thapa Magar completed the distance in one hour, 12 minutes and 13 seconds for the gold in men’s section, while Laxman Malla Thakuri and Kiran Kumar Malla of APF finished second and third respectively.

In women’s section, Humi Budhathoki of Mid-western Region won gold in one hour, 38 minutes and 29 seconds, finishing ahead of Manjukumari Khadka and Puspa Kumari Bhandari.

A total of 40 participants from three departmental teams and five development regions participated in the tournament.

According to Nepal Triathlon Association, the tournament also served as selection for the 12th South Asian Games to be held in India next year.
