Armymen dominate Day III, win 6 golds

Kathmandu, March 5:

Rajendra Bhandari of Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) won the 3,000m steeplechase gold medal on the third day of the Nepal Investment Bank 35th National Athletics Championships here on Sunday.

Bhandari finished the course in 9:24.6 minutes ahead of Gyanendra Armed Police Force (APF) Officers’ Club duo of Asha Narayan Chaudhary (10:07.7) and Lok Bahadur Rokaya (10:08.3).

Bishnu Mahato of Central Region bagged the women’s 10km walking gold with the timings of 1:20.15 hours. Saraswoti Chaudhary of the same region finished the race just two seconds behind Mahato while Laxmi Thapa of Western Region came third in 1:21.09 hours.

Devi Bahadur Basnet of TAC claimed the men’s 200m gold in 22.6 seconds followed by Nepal Police’s Gopal KC (23.4sec) and TAC’s Purna Bahadur Gautam (23.9sec).

Chandrakala Thapa and Bina Shresha, both of Nepal Police, came first and second in the women’s 200m. Thapa, who broke 400m national record on Saturday, finished the race in 26.8 seconds while Shrestha came in 28.6 seconds. Binu Budhamagar of Mid-Western Region won the bronze in 28.9 seconds.

TAC claimed the men’s 4x100m relay gold medal with the timing of 44.3 seconds. Nepal Police team won silver in 44.8 seconds followed by Western Region in 45.8 seconds.

The team of Nepal police won the women’s 4x100m relay gold in 53.3 seconds, while Mid-Western Region (57.9sec) and Far-Western Region (58.5sec) came second and third respectively.

Jagdish Kumar Chaudhary of Western Region won the men’s long jump gold clearing 6.62 metres. TAC duo of Yogendra Dhimal (6.62m) and Tika Ram Chaudhary (6.45) bagged silver and bronze medals respectively.

In women’s javalin throw, Sita Shahi of Mid-Western Region won the gold with a distance of 30.51 metres, followed by Tara Pun (29.59) of Nepal Police and Hiran Chaudhary (25.50) of Eastern Region. Tika Ram Chaudhary of TAC won the men’s 400m hurdles with the timings of 57.6 seconds. Ganesh Tamang (1.1mins) of Nepal Police and Suman Bhattarai (1:1.1mins) came second and third respectively.

Chaudhary also bagged the gold medal in men’s triple jump crossing 13.33-metre mark while TAC’s Yogendra Dhimal (13.15) and Dhurba Urawa (13.10) finished second and third respectively. Tara Bahadur Karki of TAC left his opponents way behind to win men’s discuss throw gold medal. Karki threw 32.73m while Devendra Bartaula of Central Region and Ujir Singh Bista of Nepal Police managed 24.91 and 24.84 metres respectively.
