Bangladesh thrash Sri Lanka in opening match

Lalitpur, August 18

Bangladesh recorded a 4-0 victory over Sri Lanka in the opening match of the SAFF U-15 Championship here at the ANFA Complex grounds today.

In the Group A match, Md Foysal Ahmed Fahim scored a hat-trick and Nazmul Biswas added another for Bangladesh. Fahim opened the scoring for Bangladesh in the 28th minute as he found the back of the nets from the box.

Fahim doubled the tally four minutes later when he scored from inside the box, while Biswas made it 3-0 moments before the interval after he fired into the top right corner from 20 yards leaving Sri Lankan custodian WM Gihan Sandeepa hapless.

Sri Lanka came up with substitute goalkeeper MAAM Wijesooriya in the second half and he did his best to save a couple of goals. But Wijesooriya could not prevent Fahim from completing his hat-trick in the 76th minute.

Sri Lanka midfielder RMRDG Rajapaksha brought down Bangladesh’s Yeasin Arafat inside the penalty box and Fahim converted the resulting spot kick.

Bangladesh dominated the play throughout the game and also missed a couple of chances, while their opponents Sri Lanka failed to create threatening move at the goal as they were busy in defending most of the time.

On Saturday, India will play against Maldives in Group B match.
