Barca edge Levante
Madrid, April 30:
Samuel Eto’o scored on Sunday, and FC Barcelona edged relegation-threatened Levante 1-0 to maintain their one-point lead in the Spanish league.
Third-place Real Madrid stayed in contention for their first title in four years with a 4-1 win at Athletic Bilbao. David Beckham was included in Madrid’s starting lineup for the first time in six weeks after a right knee injury, and the former England captain set up the first goal.
Eto’o fired in the 28th minute after Levante keeper Jose Francisco Molina had pushed the ball into his path.
Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice and Sergio Ramos and Jose Maria “Guti” Gutierrez added the others to help Madrid record their 10th away win, equalling a club record set in the 1960-61 and 1987-88 seasons.
Also, Antonio Puerta, Javier Chevanton and Jose Luis Marti scored to help second-place Sevilla beat Espanyol 3-1 and boost their chances of a first title since 1946.
Also, Zaragoza failed to climb into fourth place when they drew 2-2 at Osasuna. Other results were: Racing Santander 0, Deportivo La Coruna 0; Getafe 1, Real Sociedad 0; Gimnastic Tarragona 0, Villarreal 3; and Celta Vigo 0, Mallorca 3.
With six games remaining, Barcelona have 62 points, while Sevilla have 61 and Madrid 60. Valencia follow with 56, two more than Zaragoza.
Premiership
LONDON: Fulham conceded two goals in four minutes to lose 3-1 at Arsenal and stay just one point out of the relegation zone in the English Premiership.
Julio Baptista put the Gunners ahead in the fourth minute and Simon Davies levelled in the 78th. Adebayor restored Arsenal’s lead in the 84th, curling the ball past Fulham goalkeeper Antti Niemi after connecting with Cesc Fabregas’ pass. Gilberto scored the third from the penalty spot in the 87th after Moritz Volz fouled Alexander Hleb.
Fulham have 36 points, one away from the relegation zone. Arsenal, with 66 points, have already qualified for the Champions League and are closing in on Liverpool for third place.
Italian Serie A
ROME: Inter Milan celebrated their Serie A title with a 3-1 win over Empoli on Sunday. Julio Ricardo Cruz, Alvaro Recoba and Dejan Stankovic all scored for Inter, who clinched the title last weekend in Siena.
Fireworks were set off at San Siro as Inter entered the field and players brought their children out with them before and after the game.
Inter lead with 87 points. AS Roma are next with 69 points, followed by AC Milan with 59 and Lazio with 58 points. Empoli are tied with Fiorentina for sixth position with 50 points.
Palermo, who are fifth with 52 points, beat Livorno 2-1 for their first victory in three months. Sampdoria won 2-0 at Siena with goals from Christian Maggio and Gennaro Delvecchio. Gionatha Spinesi converted a penalty in the 53rd minute for Catania in a 1-0 win over Udinese. Nicola Amoruso scored twice as Reggina won 3-2 at last-place Ascoli and Parma beat Cagliari 2-1. Also, Atalanta drew 0-0 at Messina.
PSV win Dutch league
AMSTERDAM: PSV Eindhoven won their 20th Dutch league title by a single goal after beating Vitesse Arnhem 5-1 on Sunday. PSV and Ajax finished with 75 points.
PSV clinched with a +50 goal difference, one ahead of Ajax. AZ, who lost to 3-2 to Excelsior Rotterdam for the first time since 1985, took third with 72 points.
PSV scored two goals in the first 10 minutes. Alex headed in a corner from Jefferson Farfan in the eighth minute, and Farfan doubled the lead two minutes later. Theo Janssen pulled one back for Vitesse in the 13th. Ibrahim Afellay added another for PSV in the 53rd and Farfan scored his second in the 65th, before captain Philip Cocu scored the title-deciding goal in the 77th. — AP
