Barca gain on leader Real
Madrid, February 4:
Xavi Hernandez scored in the 88th minute on Sunday to give FC Barcelona a 1-0 win over Osasuna and move it within six points of Spanish league leader Real Madrid.
The Barcelona midfielder pounced on Andres Iniesta’s blocked shot and volleyed it into an open goal from just inside the area. Coach Frank Rijkaard downplayed the impact of the victory on the championship race.
Madrid, which had its eight-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with a 2-0 loss at Almeria, lead the league with 53 points. Barcelona is next with 47 points, followed by Villarreal and Espanyol with 39 each.
Valencia snapped a 10-game league winless streak with a 2-0 win at Valladolid, and Luis Fabiano scored two goals to lead 10-man Sevilla past Recreativo Huleva 2-1. Also Sunday, it was: Getafe 0, Espanyol 1; Villarreal 1, Mallorca 1; Atletico Madrid 1, Murcia 1; Zaragoza 1, Athletic Bilbao 0; and Levante 1, Racing Santander 1.
Juan Manuel Mata controlled Carlos Marchena’s cross-field pass at Valladolid and sent a left-foot shot inside the near post in the 61st minute. David Villa scored the second goal 11 minutes later for Valencia.
Luis Fabiano picked the ball off Martin Caceres in the 45th before chipping over Recreativo goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino — three minutes after Aquivaldo Mosquera was sent off. The Brazil striker headed in his league-high 16th goal in the 85th, four minutes before Beto headed in a goal for Huelva.
