Majhi to carry Nepal’s flag in Vietnam

Lalitpur, September 21

Bhagawati Majhi will carry the national flag at the opening ceremony of the fifth Asian Beach Games to be held in Danang, Vietnam from September 24 to October 3.

Majhi, who won bronze medal in Sambo Tournament in the fourth edition of the Games in Thailand last year, was selected to lead the Nepali contingent of 17 players from six sports disciplines and officials, informed Nepal Olympic Committee President Jeevan Ram Shrestha at the farewell ceremony today. Shrestha along with General Secretary Lama Tendi Sherpa and Treasurer Ratan Tandon bade farewell to the team.

Majhi has switched to newly-registered sports, Kurash in this edition of the Games and will take part in the new sport along with Prastab Ghising. Pratikshya Kharel is the team official. Asmita Chhantyal, Him Prabha Khatri and Krishnalal Tamang will take part in Sambo, while Dhananjaya Shrestha is the coach and Purushottam Simkhada the team official.

Sajan Dangol, Anil Gurung, Alen Gurung, Anil Magar and Rupesh Sunuwar are in the sepak takraw team along with coach Ram Bahadur Thapa and official Netra Prasad Gurung.

Likewise, Asim Shrestha, Sadis Pradhan and Ayush Singh will take part in basketball tournament, while Dinesh Chandra Nakarmi is the coach. In bodybuilding, players Devraj Parajuli and Garev Prasad Shrestha were joined by coach Rajendra Tuladhar, while Kopila Upreti and Kamala Pun will take part in volleyball under coach Sudesh Kumar Rimal.

National Sports Council Member Secretary Keshab Kumar Bista is the chef-de-mission, while NSC Board Member Upendra Kumar Yadav, Shiva Bahadur Basnet and Nabin Upreti are the officials from the sports governing body. The NOC also handed over sports kits to the players at the farewell ceremony today.

National Olympic Congress in Dec

The Nepal Olympic Committee board meeting today decided to organise the second NOC National Olympic Congress from December 16-17 in Kathmandu. The meeting also formed the preparation committee under its vice-president Jyoti Rana.

Treasure Ratan Tandon and Members Ashok Bajracharya, Samim Miya Ansari, Sanjeev Tuladhar, Ramji Bahadur Shrestha and Dr Saroj Krishna Shrestha are the members in the committee.

The meeting also decided to hold the Annual General Assembly on November 15 and handed over the preparation responsibilities to another vice-president Purendra Bikram Lakhe. General Secretary Lama Tendi Sherpa, joint General Secretary Rajiv Shrestha, Treasurer Tandon Members Deepak Harsha Bajracharya, Sunil Shrestha and Ramesh Shrestha are in the team.

Likewise, the NOC decided to as Olympians Sangina Baidya, Pushparaj Ojha and Umesh Maskey to recommend the names for the Olympian Commission, while NOC Members Nilendra Raj Shrestha, Tej Gurung and Samim Miya Ansari were picked for the information management for the 13th South Asian Games.

The meeting also decided to prepare a four-year calendar to prepare for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Treasurer Tandon presented the participation and financial report of the Rio Olympics and the meeting reached the conclusion that Nepal’s performance is the Summer games was satisfactory.
