Namuna win opener

KATHMANDU: Namuna Machhindra High School demolished Gauri Shankar High School 10-0 in the inaugural Coca Cola Inter-school Football Tournament here at the Dasharath Stadium today.

Dipen Rai (40th, 46th, 68th) and Rajiv Rai (24th, 34th, 67th) scored hat-trick each while Shekhar Rai (51st), Sandip Khadka (41st), Rupak Lama (54th) and Subhash Bista also scored for winners.

Minister for Education and Sports Mangal Siddhi Manandhar inaugurated the 128-team tournament. The preliminary rounds will be played under knock out basis and the winner from each of the 12 groups will advance to the next round. Those making into the second round will be divided into two groups and play under league cum knock out basis. The champions and runners up will earn Rs 200,000 and 100,000 respectively while the losing semi-finalists will get Rs 50,000 each. — HNS

Koilapani qualify

KATHMANDU: Koilapani Poll Star Club of Nawalparasi secured a ‘C’ Division berth after an emphatic 5-1 win over New Thamel Peace Club in the Group ‘B’ final at the qualifying tournament on Tuesday. Koilapani became the second team to qualify for the ‘C’ division after Kumari Youth Club. Bhojraj Joshi scored twice (72nd, 79th) while David Gurung (14th), Dal Bahadur Pun (44th) and Bidyut Gurung (54th) scored one each for the winners. Milendra Parajuli pulled back one for Thamel. — HNS

37th Chess Olympiad

KATHMANDU: Three Nepali players registered wins except for Digesh Shankar Malla at the 37th Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy, on Tuesday. Ranked 110th in the World, Nepal beat 67th-ranked Andorra 3-1 in the eighth round. Two-time Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali beat 2210th rated Jose Queralto Daniel. Bilam Lal Shrestha earned a hard fought victory over FIDE Master, rated 2312nd, Simonet Pons Marc. Rajendra Prasad Shrestha also recorded an excellent win over 2237 rated Monell Camarasa David. Rajendra earned the World rating following his brilliant run in the event. — HNS
