Chhetri ousts Karki, enter quarters

Rajesh Chhetri ousted Ramesh Karki 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 to enter the quarter-finals of the King’s Birthday Cup Open Tennis Tournament, which has been organised by All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association to mark the 59th birthday of King Gyanendra. Also advancing were Jeetendra Pariyar, who beat Sandeep Tamrakar 6-0, 6-1; Utsav Rizal, who edged out Wang Yi 6-1, 6-0; Williams, who defeated Vivek 6-2, 6-1; and Chandra Shahi, who beat Williams 6-0, 6-2.

Amul Regmi outplayed Sanjay Lama 9-4 and Gaurav Shah defeated Sameer Lama 9-2 in the U-14 boys’ singles semi-finals. Priti Rizal beat Renu Bajracharya 6-3, 7-5 and Vindiya Dayananda beat Kalpana Thapa Magar 6-1, 6-1 to make it to women’s singles final. In veterans’ (above-45 ) singles quarter-final matches, Kamal Thapa defeated Karma Gurung 7-5, 4-6, 10-5; Chambha Dhondup outplayed Chandra Man Tuladhar 6-2, 6-0; Prithvi Thakali beat Gyanendra Tamrakar 6-1, 6-1; and Manoj Rana defeated Rajeev Parajuli 6-0, 6-0. In veterans’ doubles, the duo of Krishna Ghale and Subarna Dhakwa beat the duo of Sanu Lama and Chambha Dhondup 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals. Kumar Adhikari and J Rana beat Garlinde Shrestha and Neeraj Thapa 11-3 and Chandra Shahi and Vindiya Dayananda overwhelmed Garlinde Shrestha and Neeraj Thapa 11-1, and advanced in mixed doubles second round.
