Czechs to miss Tomas Berdych in Davis Cup against India

PRAGUE: The Czech Republic will be without Tomas Berdych in the Davis Cup playoff at India next week.

Berdych, the country's top player who contributed to the 2012-13 Davis Cup titles, opted to focus on the ATP Tour this year and also didn't play in the 3-2 loss to Australia in the first round.

A day after he lost to Richard Gasquet 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 1-6 in the fourth round of the US Open, Berdych said he was ready to help the team next year.

Jiri Vesely, Lukas Rosol, Radek Stepanek and Adam Pavlasek were named Tuesday by Captain Jaroslav Navratil to play in the September 18 to 20 series on an outdoor hard court in New Delhi.

The Czechs won their only previous Davis Cup encounter with India 3-2 in 1997.
