EPL: Lalitpur Patriots off to winning start

KATHMANDU: Lalitpur Partiots won the inaugural match of the Everest Premier League T20 by thrashing Kathmandu Kings XI by 7 wickets played at the TU Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, on Monday.

After winning the toss Lalitpur Patriots invited Kathmandu to bat first in a seaming track in a foggy morning.

Suboth Bhati of India and Nepal's U-19 slow left-arm orthodox bowler Lalit Narayan Rajbanshi reaped through Kathmandu Kings XI top order as they shared seven wickets between them.

Kathmandu Kings XI led by former Sri Lankan one day international player Farveez Maharoof failed to live up to expectation as he parishes trying to heave veteran Alam over mid-wicket. They manage to muster a meagre 89 runs all out in the penultimate over.

Maharoof belted a massive six over cow corner in his brief stay on the crease. He faced nine deliveries.

Amit Shrestha top scored for the Lalitpur with 27 runs and Sri Lankan Akshu Fernanado contributed 15 runs in the loosing cause.

Man of the Match Lalit Rajbanshi was pick of the bowler with 4-0-14-3.

Bhati was also impressive as he snared four wickets while veteran Mahaboob Alam took two wickets and Yogesh Nagar an Indian right arm off break chipped in with a wicket.

In reply, Laitpur Patriots made off the disastrous start loosing opener Pawan Sarraf for nought in the very first over. However, they overcame the total with seven wickets in hand and 20 balls to spare.

Sompal Kami served a peach off a deliver as it nipped back in to rattle the stumps giving hopes of defending a low total.

However, Indian player Jaykishan Kolsawala and captain Gyanendra Malla combined for 57 runs for the second wicket partnership to thwart Kathmandu attacks with ease.

Malla contributed 20 runs off 30 balls with two hits to the fence.

Wicket keeper Kolsawala played sensibly, and smashed 44 off 48 balls with four hits to the fence and two towering sixes, and took his team home.

Akushu Fernanado took two wickets and Sompal Kami chipped-in with a wicket.

Chitwan Tigers will take on Pokhara Rhinos in first game and Biratnagar Warriors will face Lalitpur Partiots in the second game of tomorrow's play.

The winner of the tournament will bag Rs 2.1 million.
