Bastad, July 5:

Gaston Gaudio lost only four games in a straight-set victory over Nikolay Davidenko in the first round of the Swedish Open. Gaudio, the French Open champion, won 6-3, 6-1 on centre court over the unseeded Russian, who has won two ATP tournaments on clay in his career.

Gaudio, seeded No 2, is the highest seed remaining in the Swedish Open. Top-seeded Carlos Moya of Spain withdrew because of an injury he sustained last weekend. In other first-round matches, No 5 seed Tommy Robredo of Spain rallied from a set down to outlast Agustin Calleri of Argentina 4-6, 7-5, 6-4; Kristof Vliegen of Belgium topped France’s Arnaud Di Pasquale 6-4, 6-2 and Filippo Volandri of Italy rallied Argentina’s past Guillermo Canas 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.
