Govortsova upsets Bondarenko at Florida tennis
PONTE VEDRA: Second seeded Alona Bondarenko was sent crashing out of the WTA MPS Group Championships after being upset by unseeded Olga Govortsova of Belarus 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
Govortsova, who is ranked 52nd in the world, breezed through the final set after winning the first then stumbling in the second against 25th-ranked Bondarenko.
In other matches, defending champion Caroline Wozniacki, ranked No. 2 in the world, got 77 percent of her first serves in and took just 56 minutes to win her first-round match against Patty Schnyder 6-0, 6-4.
Eighth-seeded American Melanie Oudin beat Rossana De Los Rios 7-5, 6-2.
Oudin had a 5-2 lead in the first set slip away before rallying and broke De Los Rios' serve each time in the second set.
Also, American Bethanie Mattek-Sands defeated Anastasia Rodionova 6-2, 6-7 (4/7), 7-5; Angelique Kerber beat American Vania King 6-2, 6-3; Ayumi Morita surprised Sesil Karatantcheva 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 and China's Peng Shuai defeated Taiwan's Chang Kai-Chen 6-4, 6-2.
