KATHMANDU, JANUARY 17
Nepal's national women's cricket team is set to face Thailand in the opening fixture of the ICC Women's T20 Global Qualifier in Kathmandu on Sunday.
The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) is hosting the 10-team tournament at the TU Cricket Stadium and Mulpani Cricket Ground in the capital. The top four teams will secure berths for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in England and Wales in June this year.
Nepal's captain, Indu Varma, described the tournament as a defining moment for the team and the country. "It's a huge opportunity for us as the host nation to qualify for the World Cup after 18 years. This marks a turning point for women's cricket in Nepal and a significant milestone for CAN in hosting one of the biggest ICC events in the country," she said.
"We are genuinely excited to compete against strong teams, and we are looking forward to playing exciting and competitive cricket."
Nepal has been drawn in Group B alongside Scotland, Thailand, Zimbabwe, and the Netherlands, while Group A comprises Bangladesh, Ireland, Papua New Guinea (PNG), Namibia, and the USA.
The top three teams from each group will advance to the Super Six stage, from which the top four teams will book their place in the global event.
Nepal will play Thailand in the opening match tomorrow, followed by fixtures against the Netherlands on January 22, Zimbabwe on January 24, and Scotland on January 26. All of Nepal's group-stage matches will be held at the TU Cricket Stadium.
CAN has announced free entry for spectators at both venues throughout the tournament.
