Inter Milan close in on Serie A title
Rome, February 28:
Inter Milan may have sealed a third successive Serie A title after drawing AS Roma 1-1 with two minutes left on Wednesday.
Inter hold a nine-point lead on Roma with 13 rounds remaining, and the teams do not meet again this season.
One fan at San Siro held aloft a sign that read “Game Over” after Javier Zanetti’s 88th-minute goal, which was the Inter captain’s first this season.
Roma captain Francesco Totti put the visitors ahead in the 38th by redirecting a cross from Max Tonetto.
A bicycle kick by Inter forward Hernan Crespo ricocheted off the post in the 18th and skipped across the front of Roma’s goal before going out of bounds.
AC Milan drew 1-1 in Catania, where they haven’t won since 1964. In the 55th, Milan’s new 18-year-old Brazil forward Alexandre Pato scored his fifth goal in his first eight Serie A matches. Catania forward Gionatha Spinesi equalised in the 63rd.
Senegal forward Papa Waigo scored his first Serie A goal as Fiorentina edged Livorno 1-0 in a Tuscan derby to move back ahead of Milan into fourth place. Inter lead with 61 points, followed by Roma (52), Juventus (48), Fiorentina (44), and Milan (42). Also on Wednesday, it was: Atalanta 4, Sampdoria 1; Genoa 2, Napoli 0; Lazio 0, Reggina 0; Palermo 2, Empoli 0; Parma 2, Udinese 0; and Siena 1, Cagliari 0.
FA Cup
LONDON: Middlesbrough reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with an own-goal from Sheffield United goalkeeper Patrick Kenny in extra time to beat the League Championship club 1-0.
Kenny helped the ball into his own net in the 114th minute after a shot from Mido rebounded off the post. The match went into extra time after a scoreless 90 minutes. The original match also ended 0-0. Middlesbrough host Cardiff in the quarter-finals on March 9.
In the other quarter-finals, Manchester United host Portsmouth and Chelsea are at Barnsley on March 8. Bristol Rovers host West Bromwich Albion a day later.
Copa del Rey
MADRID: Xavi Hernandez’s injury-time equaliser brought FC Barcelona a 1-1 draw with Valencia in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg on Wednesday.
Samuel Eto’o appeared to handle before firing a shot which was parried by Valencia goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand and midfielder Xavi drove in the rebound.
Striker David Villa gave the visitors the lead in the 70th minute when he turned home a low cross from the right by substitute Javier Arizmendi, giving Valencia a slight advantage for the second leg at their Mestalla Stadium on March 19 or 20.
Barcelona, whose draw extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to 15 matches, are aiming to add to their record 24 triumphs in Spain’s knockout competition, the last of which came a decade ago.
In the other semi-final, Getafe bid to boost their hopes of repeating last season’s debut appearance in the final when they host Racing Santander. The final will be played on April 16.
