Iran, Tajikistan, Bahrain all in contention

KATHMANDU: Three teams from Group

‘B’ are vying for two berths available for the finals of

the AFC Under-16 Championship here at the Dasharath Stadium on Tuesday.

With hosts Nepal and Lebanon out of the contention, Iran, Tajikistan and Bahrain

are in the race to make it to

the finals. The defending champions Iran stands atop the table with seven points and will take on Bahrain, who have six points, on Tuesday’s first match. Tajikistan will meet hosts Nepal, who are yet to open their account, in the second match of the day. Tajikstan also have seven points and are second behind Iran only on goal difference.

Even draw will ensure both Iran and Tajikistan qualify for the finals. Bahrain, however, will need to secure all three points to assure their place in the finals. Bahrain can still qualify if they draw Iran and hope Nepal defeat Tajikistan. Bahrain have so far scored seven goals and conceded two while Tajikstan have scored five times in the tournament and are yet to concede a goal.

Nepal, who are at the bottom of the table with three loss,

are still to score a goal in

the qualifiers while Lebanon have already completed their campaign playing all four matches. Lebanon are also out of the race after earning just three points, courtesy a win against the hosts.
