League features 32 matches, upgraded Kirtipur stadium and prize purse of Rs 11 million for champions
KATHMANDU, NOVEMBER 17
The second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) begins today at the upgraded Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, with defending champions Janakpur Bolts taking on Kathmandu Gurkhas in the opening match at 4 pm. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 2 pm, according to Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN).
Janakpur, who defeated Kathmandu in the first edition, will be led this season by West Indies great Shivnarine Chanderpaul, replacing former Nepal coach Pubudu Dassanayake. Kathmandu have appointed Monti Desai, also a former Nepal head coach, as their head coach.
The tournament, which runs until December 13, will feature 32 matches, including league games, three playoffs, and the final. All matches will be hosted in Kirtipur, where the stadium has been upgraded with new parapets accommodating 10,000 spectators and floodlights, allowing night matches for the first time in the venue's history.
Eight franchise teams are competing: Janakpur Bolts, Sudurpashchim Royals, Karnali Yaks, Pokhara Avengers, Biratnagar Kings, Chitwan Rhinos (Rginos), Kathmandu Gurkhas and Lumbini Lions.
CAN expects to earn Rs 400 million from the league. The winning team will take home Rs 11 million, while the runner-up will receive Rs 5.1 million. The third- and fourth-placed teams will get Rs 2.5 million and Rs 1.5 million, respectively.
