Jankovic beats Dementieva

Moscow, October 11:

World’s No 1 and top seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia battled back from a set down to reach the final of the Kremlin Cup, a joint ATP and WTA $2.4-million event, beating third seed Elena Dementieva of Russia.

Jankovic won 0-6, 6-1, 6-0 to record her sixth win over Dementieva in their ninth head-to-head meeting and set up a meeting with home hope Vera Zvonareva.

The start of the second set was almost a mirror image of the first as this time the 23-year-old Serbian looked in command. In the deciding set, this year’s US Open finalist Jankovic underlined her domination in taking it at love to make her season’s sixth final berth.

In Sunday’s final, Jankovic will face the seventh-seeded Zvonareva of Russia, who defeated her compatriot Dinara Safina, the second seed, 6-2, 7-6(7/5).

In men’s section, Russian Marat Safin advanced to the final after Mischa Zverev of Germany pulled out of their scheduled semi-final match.

Austrian Open

VIENNA: Gael Monfils produced a scintillating performance to reach the semi-finals of the Austrian Open, upsetting second seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile 6-3, 7-6 (7/2). An early break in each set put German Philipp Kohlschreiber on his way to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over fifth seeded Fernando Verdasco, his third in four meetings with the Spaniard. Kohlschreiber did not face a break point in the one-sided victory, that took just 67 minutes.

Just one break of serve in each set separated Feliciano Lopez of Spain and Austrian Jurgen Melzer, as Lopez advanced 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Unseeded German qualifier Philipp Petzschner reached the first semi-final of his career with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Spain’s Carlos Moya.
