Jankovic in semi-final

Strasbourg, May 24:

Second-seeded Jelena Jankovic beat Italy’s Maria Elena Camerin 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday to reach the semi-finals of the Strasbourg International.

Jankovic, who trailed 3-1 in the second set, next plays sixth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues. Garrigues rallied to beat No 4 Li Na of China 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Jankovic, ranked fourth, has now reached the semi-finals in eight of 14 tournaments this season and is looking for her second straight title after winning last week’s Italian Open.

On Wednesday, top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France beat Varvara Lepchenko of Uzbekistan 6-4, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals.

Mauresmo, formerly the world’s top-ranked player, is looking to return to form for the French Open starting from Sunday after a string of disappointing results. She was topped by 29th-ranked Samantha Stosur in the second round of the Italian Open last week, and beaten by 53rd-ranked Julia Vakulenko in the German Open third round on May 11.

Emilie Loit of France routed Lilia Osterloh of the US 6-1, 6-0 to set up a quarter-final clash with Mauresmo. Russia’s Elena Vesnina also advanced after beating Belgium’s Caroline Maes 6-1, 6-4. Maria Elena Camerin had a 6-3, 6-2 win over Japan’s Aiko Nakamura on Wednesday.
