Kamal betters personal record

Kathmandu, August 11:

Nepali Army athlete Kamal Bahadur Adhikari crashed out of the the Beijing Olympics but improved his national record during the Group C men’s 69kg weightlifting on Monday. The 10th South Asian Games gold medallist finished with a total lift of 268kg — 114 in snatch and 154 in clean and jerk. His previous best was 266kg — 113 in snatch and 153 in clean and jerk.

Adhikari was only better than Logona Esau (244kg) of Tuvalu and Nizom Sangov (235kg) of Tajikistan. Chinthana Vidanage of Sri Lanka topped of the group with 293kg. Francis Luna-Grenier of Canada also lifted 293kg but stood second due to body-weight difference.

Thapa to play today

KATHMANDU: The first Nepali woman judo player Devu Thapa will try her luck in the 63kg judo competition at the Beijing Olympics on Tuesday. Thapa have a first round bye and will play the winner of the match between Johanna Ylinen of Finland and Wang Chin-Fang of

Chinese Taipei. Thapa is only the third Nepali judoka to participate in the Olympics after Sri Ram Pradhan and Ganga Bahadur Dongol (Seoul Olympics, 1988).
