Kazan end campaign with win as Zenit pip Lokomotiv
MOSCOW: Newly-crowned champions Rubin Kazan ended the Russian Premier League season with a confident 3-0 win at Krasnodar on Sunday.
Rubin collected 63 points from 30 matches to finish eight points ahead of Spartak Moscow, whose 2-1 away defeat to Zenit allowed the Saint Petersburg side to finish third on 54 points and clinch the final Champions League place.
Rubin took the lead through Turkish striker Hasan Kabze, who opened the scoring in the 10th minute.
Polish midfielder Rafal Murawski added a second goal in the 32nd minute and Kazan forward Igor Portnyagin rounded off the scoring with nine minutes to go.
Nine-time champions Spartak had assured second place ahead of this weekend's round of matches.
Zenit meanwhile found themselves a man down just before half-time after Hungarian halfback Szabolcs Huszti was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Needing a win to secure third in the table and a place in next season's Champions League qualifying round, a 27-metre freekick from midfielder Konstantin Zyryanov which found the Spartak net in first half injury time sent Zenit on their way.
Five minutes after the restart Belgian defender Nicolas Lombaerts netted Zenit's second goal, heading home from close range after a corner.
Spartak's German defender Malik Fathi reduced arrears with seven minutes to go, heading home Yevgeny Makeyev's right-handed cross.
Lokomotiv Moscow, who shared third spot with Zenit before the match, took a 2-0 lead inside 15 minutes at Khimki through Nigerian forward Peter Odemwingie and Russian international striker Dmitry Sychev.
Khimki forward Alexander Antipenko reduced arrears 20 minutes after the interval only for Sychev to restore Lokomotiv's two-goal lead with his second of the match for a 3-1 win.
Lokomotiv finished on the same points as Zenit after also winning 15 of their 30 games, but end up in fourth due to an inferior head-to-head record with the Saint Petersburg side.
