Krishna Mohan Memorial badminton begins

Kathmandu, November 16:

Maheshwori Dongol and Mira Kumari Tamang got walk over wins on the inaugural day women’s singles matches at the fifth Nationwide Krishna Mohan Memorial Open Badminton Championship, organised by Nepal Armed Police Force, here today.

In all, 580 shuttlers from 40 districts are vying for the championships in eight categories — men and women’s singles and doubles, mixed and veterans’ doubles and Under-19 boys and girls’ singles.

Men’s singles winner will get Rs 50,000 while the runner up will pocket Rs 25,000. Losing semi-finalists will get Rs 10,000 each along with Rs 5,000 each for the four losing quarter-finalists.

Winner and runner in the women’s singles will earn Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively while the losing semi-finalists will receive Rs 10,000 apiece. Likewise, shuttlers reaching the semi-finals in men’s and women’s doubles, Under-10 boys and girls’ and veterans and mixed doubles will also get cash prizes.

Men’s doubles winners will get Rs 50,000 and runners up Rs 30,000 while the losing semi-finalists will earn Rs 10,000 each. Women’s doubles and mixed doubles champions will receive Rs 30,000 and runners up Rs 20,000 each while the losing semi-finalists will get Rs 10,000.

Likewise, winners in the U-19 boys and girls’ section will receive Rs 20,000 and the runners up Rs 10,000 each whereas the losing semi-finalists will pocket Rs 5,000 each. The organisers have also set aside Rs 75,000 for the winners in the veterans’ doubles section.

Earlier, Minister for Youth and Sports Gopal Shakya inaugurated the event.
