Michelle Larcher de Brito of Portugal beat veteran Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3) at the Sony Ericsson Open on Wednesday. The 14-year-old will next face No 16-seeded Daniela Hantuchova.

In men’s first-round play, three-time French Open champion Gustavo Kuerten lost to Dutch Raemon Sluiter 6-2, 6-2. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez beat Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), and Thomas Johansson, the 2002 Australian Open champion, beat Alberto Martin 6-4, 6-3.

Japan’s Akiko Morigami beat Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak 6-1, 7-5 and will play Kim Clijsters.
