KATHMANDU, JUNE 21

In the opening match of the SAFF Champions Football 2023, Nepal suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of a formidable Kuwait team. The encounter showcased Kuwait's dominance and their vast World Cup experience, evident from the very beginning. While Nepal initially exhibited promising gameplay, they struggled to keep up with the blistering pace of the Kuwaiti players.

Kuwait controlled the field, leaving little space for the Nepali players to maneuver. In the 22nd minute, Kuwait's captain, Khalid Hajiya, broke the deadlock with a well-executed goal.

Just before halftime, Sabib Al Khaldi doubled Kuwait's advantage, compounding Nepal's difficulties.

After the break, Sani Shrestha missed a golden opportunity to score for Nepal. Despite a well-timed header near Kuwait's goalpost, the ball went wide. Shortly thereafter, Kuwait was awarded a penalty against Nepal, which Mohammed Abdullah confidently converted, extending Kuwait's lead to 3-0. Nevertheless, Nepal's Anjan Bista managed to salvage some pride by navigating past Kuwait's defense and scoring a goal. This marked his 12th international goal, making him the third Nepali player to score against Kuwait.

Towards the end of the match, Nepal created a few chances but failed to convert them into successful attempts, ultimately falling short.

Nepal, India, Pakistan, and Kuwait are grouped together in Group 'A' of the ongoing SAFF Championship.

On Saturday, Nepal will compete against hosts India on Saturday at Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Bangalore.
