Maharjan faces defeat

KATHMANDU: Nepali boxer Lalita Maharjan lost to Mongolian Jargan Ocrchhibat in the quarter-finals of the Asian Women Elite Boxing Championship in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on Saturday.

Competing in the women’s 48kg weight category, Maharjan faced defeat in the dying moment of the bout. Both the boxers went neck-to-neck until the Mongolian snatched a point moment before the final bell.

Maharjan had defeated Leona Hui Xin Yee of Singapore in the first round bout on Thursday.

Poonam Rawal, who earned a bye in the first round of the 64kg weight category, will play against Thailand boxer in Sunday’s quarter-final bout.

Other two boxers, Bimala Shrestha and Sangita Sunar faced defeats in first round matches on Thursday.

In 54kg, Shrestha went down to Chinese boxer Piaopiao Liu, while Sunar lost to Sri Lankan opponent Sulanjani Lankapurayalage in the 60kg section.
