Lama receives help
KATHMANDU: Nepal Sports Club on Sunday provided the 11th South Asian Games and 13th Asian Pacific Shito Ryu Championship gold medallist Sunil Lama with financial assistance of Rs 1,35,208. Club President Kushal Shrestha and General Secretary of Nepal Karate Federation Hari Sharan KC handed over a cheque to Lama, whose house was damaged by the April 25 earthquake. Shrestha said the amount would help Lama recover from the grief and inspire him to win medal in the upcoming South Asian Games. The 10th SA Games gold medallist Shrestha informed the amount was collected through facebook campaign.
Team off to Korea
KATHMANDU: A five-member taekwondo team on Sunday left for South Korea to participate in the Korea Open Taekwondo Championship slated for July 22-27. Ranjan Shrestha (53kg), Rohit Tamang (63kg) and Sakshyam Karki (74kg) will take part in the championship. Coach Nabin Kumar Shrestha and manager Arjun KC accompanied the players to Korea. The team will also participate in the International Open Taekwondo Tournament slated for July 27-29. Nepal Olympic Committee President Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan and General Secretary Jeevan Ram Shrestha bade farewell to the team.
Seven-a-side Football
DAMAULI: Byas Youth Club āCā and Dumsi Chaur Youth Club began the Byas Seven-a-side Football Tournament with wins here on Sunday. In the opening match of the tournament, Byas āCā defeated Akala Youth Club 4-1, while Dumsi Chaur beat UNFA Club 3-0. A total of 33 teams are competing in the tournament. The winners will walk away with Rs 30,115, while the runners-up will receive Rs 15,100.
Nisha wins silver
KATHMANDU: Nisha Rawal of Nepal won silver medal in the Jeonju Open International Taekwondo Championship in South Korea on Sunday. Competing in the above 73kg category, Rawal received bye in the first round and defeated a Korean player in semi-finals, where she lost to another Korean player in sudden death after they earned four points each in three rounds. Sita Tamang and Nima Gurung lost their matches. All three players took part in the event following their participation in the Summer Universiade.
Liverpool agree deal
LONDON: Liverpool have agreed a 32.5 million pounds deal with Aston Villa for striker Christian Benteke, BBC reported on Sunday. He will undergo a medical by Tuesday and is unlikely to join his new team on their current tour of Australia. Since joining Aston Villa from Genk in 2012, Benteke has scored 49 goals in 101 appearances, helping the team avoid relegation last season.
