Lampard is Writers’ PoY

London, May 6:

Chelsea FC and England midfielder Frank Lampard was named player of the year on Friday by the Football Writers’ Association.

Lampard’s teammate John Terry was second, with Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher third. Lampard finished runner-up to Arsenal’s Thierry Henry last year. Lampard is only the second Englishman since Alan Shearer in 1994 to win the PWA award. The other was Teddy Sheringham in 2001.

Terry was named player of the year by the Professional Footballers’ Association on April 24 ahead of Lampard. That award was voted for by his fellow Premier League players.

The PWA’s Footballer of the Year award was first presented at the end of the 1947-48

season, with Stanley Matthews the winner.
