Aid for Mahato
KATHMANDU: Nightingale School raised Rs 101,101 for the treatment of national volleyball and athletics player Hari Bahadur Mahato, who is suffering from kidney failures. National Sports Council member secretary Jeevan Ram Shrestha gave away the sum to Mahato at a programme after the volleyball tournament organised by Nightingale School. Out of the total sum, Rs 36,000 was raised from tickets, while the school gave Rs 50,000 and the NSC added Rs 15,000. Earlier, Nepal Police Club finished second beating Nepal APF Club 25-22, 25-18, 25-12. Tribhuvan Army Club had already won the championship with nine points. APF finished third with three points, while Nightingale returned empty-handed. — HNS
Prime Cup basketball
KATHMANDU: United Academy defeated Xavier International 37-23 in the boys’ section match at the fifth Prime Cup Under-19 National Basketball Tournament here today. Kiran scored match winning 17 points while Sunny Shakya contributed 10 for Xavier. In another boys’ match, Kachurgr Thakuri top-scored with 17 points for Campion but could not avert his team’s 51-39 defeat against British Gurkha . Reliance beat NCCS 33-17, White House overwhelmed KIST 52-23 and Classic College got a walkover from Golden Gate in other boys’ section matches. In the girls’ section, New Summit sneaked past Natinal Campus 17-16 and Orient College edged DAV 24-13. — HNS
Rastra Rai felicitated
KATHMANDU: Taekwondo (ITF) Nepal is organising the first Everest Invitational Open Taekwondo Championship and third ITF Training Seminar from December 19-23 in Dhulikhel. In all, 110 players from Nepal, India, Pakistan and the UK will take part in 18 weight categories — 10 in men and eight in women’s sections, said the organisers at a press meet on Sunday. Meanwhile, Taekwondo (ITF) Nepal also felicitated Rastra Rai, president of Sagarmatha Taekwondo Dojang in UK, for winning the bronze medal at the 14th World ITF Championship held in Birmingham four months earlier. Rai is here as the team leader of the UK team for the upcoming taekwondo tournament. — HNS
Twenty20 Cricket
KATHMANDU: Excel Business Link Pvt Ltd and Fashion Link Management are jointly organising the Twenty20 Open Knock Out Cricket Tournament from January 9 at the Tundikhel grounds. A total of 32 teams including six from outside the valley are expected to take part in the tournament. The winners will receive Rs 50,000, while the runners up will get Rs 25,000.
The Man of the Series will be awarded with Rs 15,000, while the best batsman, bowler, wicketkeeper and fielder will get Rs 8,000 each and the man of the match Rs 500, said the organisers at a press meet on Sunday. A seven-member organising committee under Raj Kumar Panta has been formed for the successful organisation of the 19-day event. — HNS
