Ratna Shield soccer

LALITPUR:

St Xavier’s, Trungram International Academy (TIA), Bhanubhakta School, and Manju Shree School registered wins in the day’s matches at the Ratna Shield Inter-school Football Tournament, which has been organised by All Nepal Football Association, here at ANFA Technical Centre, Chyasal. St Xavier’s School defeated Gyan Mala 5-4. Ram Shrestha and Manish Rai scored two goals each and Kamal Limbu netted the other for St Xavier’s. For Gyan Mala, Khalden Gurung and Purna Lama got two goals apiece. In the other match, TIA thrashed Adarsha Vidya Mandir 5-0. Kamal Limbu struck twice while Rajiv Sunuwar, Jeevan Pariyar and Rajiv Thapa netted one each. Likewise, Bhanubhakta outplayed Jagat Mandir 5-1. Aashish Gurung struck twice and Sushil Maharjan, Saroj Lama and Biplab KC scored one goal each for Bhanubhakta, while Rakesh Limbu scored the consolation goal for Jagat Mandir. In the day’s last match, Salip Karki scored a hat-trick as Manju Shree edged past GEMS 4-3. Anil Raut scored the other goal for Manju Shree, whereas Wilson Gurung netted two and Srijan Sherchan struck one for GEMS. — HNS

Karishma sets record

KATHMANDU:

Karishma Karki set a new national record in the 400m free style finishing her heats in 5:46.73 at the Asian Age-group Swimming Championship held in Bangkok from August 19-25. Karki broke her own old record of 5:55.03. The Nepali team, also including Sagun Man Singh, who participated in the 50m free style event, and coach Rabin Poudel, returned yesterday. — HNS

Budokai-Do 50th

KATHMANDU:

Budokai-Do Karate got the official status from the National Sports Council after the sports governing body registered the Nepal Budokai-Do Full Contact Association as its 50th association today. The NSC had formed an ad hoc committee on August 21. NSC member secretary Kishor Bahadur Singh gave away nomination letters to the officials of the association — Bishwo Sagar Shrestha (president), Ratna Sagar Shrestha (vice president), Ram hari Bhetwal (general secretary), Raj Kumar Shrestha (secretary), Kaji Man Shrestha (treasurer), Kedareshwor Man Sthapit (joint treasurer), and members Kedar Shrestha, Jagat Dhami, Rabina Shrestha, Surendra Lamsal, Rajesh Bahadur Shrestha, Madhav Prasad Pudasaini, and a representative from the council. — HNS

Rekha, Tilottama win

KATHMANDU:

Rekha Rai and Tilottama Basyal entered the final of the staff badminton event at the sports week, which has been organised by National Sports Council, to mark its 42nd anniversary. In men’s doubles, the duo of Dhruba Gurung and Min Sharma, and Bishnu Panthi and Arun Upadhyaya have entered the semi-finals. In chess, Santa Bam Malla defeated Mohammad Alam Siddiqui and entered the final, while other matches saw Meghraj Kathayat beat Basudev Acharya, Kul Bahadur Thapa beat Shyam Rokka. In women’s section, Tilottama beat Bhawani Adhikari and entered the final, while Anita Gurung and Radha Shrestha made it to the last four. The NSC team will play a friendly football match against Nepal Sports Journalists Forum on Thursday. — HNS

Monsoon Meet 2005

KATHMANDU:

RIBS and Wilson Academy won the senior and junior boys’ titles at the Monsoon Meet Inter-school Basketball Tournament organised by Shridiwa International School. In the senior boys’ section final, RIBS outplayed hosts Shridiwa 81-22. Prayag Gurung top-scored in the match with 24 points including seven 3-pointers, while MVP Ajay Rai netted two 3-pointers in his 10 points. Karma Gurung of Shridiwa top-scored with 11 points. However, RIBS failed to sweep the titles after their junior boys lost 36-56 to Wilson. Ratna Rokka of Wilson top-scored in the match with 19 points. Krishna Gurung of Shridiwa was declared the MVP. Principal of Shridiwa Prabin Moktan and Laxman Ratna Tuladhar, director of Syakar Company gave away prizes. — HNS
