Thapa, Thakali win
LALITPUR: Kamal Thapa beat Chambha Dhondup 6-1, 6-3 to set up a final clash with Manoj Rana, who beat Prithvi Thakali 6-1, 6-2, in the veterans’ (above 45) singles section at the King’s Birthday Cup Open Tennis Tournament, which has been organised by All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association to mark the 59th birthday of King Gyanendra.
Friendship karate
KATHMANDU: Nepal Renbukai Karate Association is organising the first Friendship Karate and Kick Boxing Tournament from July 30-31 to mark the 59th birthday of King Gyanendra. In all, 250 athletes from 12 teams, including five karate teams that are affiliated to Nepal Karate Federation, Renbukai Karate, three teams of the valley, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Royal Nepal Army, will take part in 18 different events. The organisers have formed a seven-member organising committee under the convenorship of Prabhanjan Singh and four sub-committees for the successful running of the event.
Karki S’pore-bound
KATHMANDU: General secretary of Nepal Wushu Association and chief coach Pranil Dhoj Karki today left for Singapore to take part in the technical committee meeting of Asian Wushu Federation to be held from July 20-22. Karki will discuss the wushu events included in the 10th South Asian Games to be held in Sri Lanka next year. Karki will also attend the the third junior Asian Wushu Championship as one of the jury members.
Spikers to go to Korea
KATHMANDU: A seven member Nepali volleyball team of Mangal Higher Secondary School is going to South Korea on July 23 following an invitation from Sun Moon University. The team will take part in the Inter-college Friendly Girls’ Volleyball Tournament, to be held there from July 26-August 2.
The players are Soni Tandukar, Sanju Subedi, Pramila Maharjan, Laxmi Kumari Maharjan, Rupa Maharjan and Ishwori Neupane whereas Indira Niraula will be leading the team as coach. — HNS
