Five-a-side soccer

KATHMANDU: Nepal Sports Club is organising the Five-a-side Football tournament on Saturday in Swayambhu. In all, nine teams — Nepal Sports Journalists Forum, Siddhartha Vanasthali School, Xavier College, Vanasthali Group, Royal Drugs, Hero Honda, Anna Casino, Bal Kumari Club and Wilson Academy — are taking part in the event.

Magar, Shahi advance

LALITPUR: The duo of Dr Singha Bahadur Basnet outplayed the duo of Kumar Mohan Bahadur Singh and Chandra Man Tuladhar in the inaugural match of the King’s Birthday Cup Tennis Tournament, which has been organised by All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association to mark the 59th birthday of King Gyanendra. In Men’s singles, Shree Ram Magar defeated Sarit Lama 6-0, 6-1; Mahesh Shahi beat Niraj Thapa 6-3, 6-0; Nirsh Shrestha beat Raju Gurung 6-2, 6-1; Utsav Rizal beat Atma Ram Karki 6-0, 6-1; Chandra Shahi beat Punny 6-2, 6-0; William Affif beat John Lorenzen 6-1, 6-3; Binay Tuladhar beat Kiswor Singh 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; Jeetendra Pariyar beat Masuj Gurung 6-0, 6-0; Kumar Gurung beat Yam Gurung 6-0, 6-0; Rajendra Tajhya beat Sabir Shrestha 6-0, 6-2, 6-3; Dawa S Sherpa beat Chhewang Lama 6-3, 6-3; Rajesh Chhetri beat Achut Basnet 6-1, 6-1; Ramesh Karki beat Jack Garbuja 6-1, 6-1; Madan Bahadur Katuwal beat Hari Rai 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; and Kamal Bhandari and Santosh Khatri earned walkovers fron Sobu Shrestha and Krishna Ghale respectively. The winners entered the round of last 16. Also advancing in Veterans’ singles were Amrit Kansakar, Uttam Lama, Subha Ratna Shahi, Lim, Karma Ghale, Chandra Shahi, Rajesh Chhetri, Wang Yi, Sunil Gurung, Soviet Man Shrestha, Harbinder Singh, Dharma R Shahi, Kamal Thapa, Raju Shrestha and Dhakpa Lama. In all, 150 participants, including 14 women, are playing in nine different categories. Earlier, ANLTA president Siddheshwor Kumar Singh inaugurated the event.

Tamrakar enters final

KATHMANDU: Nibesh Tamrakar of Malpi School beat Rajan Shiwakoti of Dipendra Police School 15-10, 15-4 and Kishor Rana beat fellow DPS player Sushil Bista 15-6, 15-4 to enter the Senior Boys’ final of the fourth Gillette Inter-school Badminton Tournament. Anil Malla defeated Tirtha Malla 11-1, 11-4 and Tshering Ghale beat Pratik Budhathoki 11-2, 11-2 in junior boys’ semi-finals. Kusum Rai beat Smriti Tamang 11-4, 11-3 and Nikita Tuladhar beat Siru Shrestha 11-5, 11-2 to enter the senior girls’ final. In junior girls’ semi-finals, Tshering Lhamu beat Chhenga Sherpa 11-4, 11-3 and Chhimi Dilkar beat Deepa Bhujel 11-9, 11-2. Bijesh Tamrakar and Sajan Tamrakar made it to the middle boys’ final whereas Siru Shrestha

and Zenden Thakuri advanced to girls’ section final.

Thapa, Gurung win

LALITPUR: Hira Bahadur Thapa defeated Prajjwol Pradhan 3-0 and entered the final of the Birthday Cup Open Squash Tournament, which has been organised by Nepal Squash Rackets Association to mark the 59th birthday of King Gyanendra. In Sunday’s championship match, Thapa will face Suresh Gurung, who beat Anil Singh 3-1. Sudib Bahadur Singh beat Gyanendra Khanal 3-0 and Ajay Singh outplayed Dilip Adhikari with the same margin to advance to the Masters’ Open final. Bhavana Sunuwar advanced to the Women’s Open final with a 3-0 win over Matte Damboard. In Novice section, Gyanu Chaudhari beat Zonn Tyynal 3-0 to enter the quarter-finals and Ben Majikar defeated Prabesh Maharjan 3-0 to make it to the Men’s Plate quarters. — HNS
