Golden Gate triumph

KATHMANDU: Golden Gate 'A' and CPS Higher Secondary School won their respective opening matches at the Prime Cup U-19 (+2) Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Saturday. Golden Gate 'A' defeated Ullens 62-29 while CPS edged past Whitefield 52-19. In other boys' matches, Bernhardt saw off NCCS 40-36, VS Niketan overcame Golden Gate 'B' 45-44 and hosts Prime beat Xavier International 39-32. In girls' section, Prime outplayed NCCS 18-5 and National College defeated Ullens 13-11. A total of 26 teams —19 in boys and seven in girls — are participating in the tournament. — HNS

Vanasthali beat Adarsha

BHAKTAPUR: Siddhartha Vanasthali defeated Adarsha Secondary High School 3-0 in the third TVS Cup Inter-school Invitational Football Tournament on Saturday. Man of the match Roman Shrestha scored a brace and Sajan Khatri struck another for Vanasthali. In another match, Nexus International School edged past Divya Deep Jyoti School 5-4 in tiebreaker after a 1-1 deadlock. Swikar Parajuli had provided Nexus the lead before Sushan Shrestha levelled the score for Divya Deep to extend the match to penalty shootout. — HNS

Shrestha claims gold

KATHMANDU: Birendra Shrestha of Kisipidi Budokaido beat teammate Shailendra Maharjan to win the men's open championship in the first Rupak Memorial Cup Budokaido Nationwide Full-contact Karate on Saturday. Binita Ghalan of Lalitpur claimed the women's open title with a win over Nisha Lama of Kathmandu. Suresh KC defeated Roshan Bista to bag the men's 30kg gold while Sanjeev Maharjan saw off Sunrise Chaurasia to win the men's 40kg title. In the other finals, Kunsang Lama dispatched Manil Maharjan in the men's 50kg and Chandra Maharjan overcame Bir Chandra Nakarmi in the men's 55kg section. — HNS

LRI, Rara Hill win

KATHMANDU: Learning Realm International (LRI) and Rara Hill won both their senior boys and girls' section matches here at the first LA Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Saturday. LRI beat Araniko 42-26 in senior boys' before seeing off hosts Little Angels 'D' 20-2 in the senior girls' section match. Likewise, Rara Hill sneaked past LA 'A 43-39 in boys' and 22-18 against LA 'B' in the girls' section. In another boys' match, Ideal Model crushed LA 'B' 41-8. In other girls' section matches, LA 'A' defeated Ideal Model 17-11 and LA 'C' edged past GEMS 8-6. — HNS

Archers off to Vietnam

KATHMANDU: Nepali archery team left for Vietnam to participate in the ongoing third Indoor Asian Games on Saturday. Prem Prasad Pun, Jit Bahadur Moktan, Ashim Sherchan and Ramesh Bhattachan will compete in the 18m individual and team events. The Games commenced on Friday with the slogan of ‘For The Rising Asia’. President of Vietnam Nguyen Minh Triet inaugurated the Games. A total of 43 nations including Nepal are participating in the Games. The ceremony began with march-past by the participating teams. Seventeen players will represent Nepal in in five disciplines — basketball, snooker, chess, boxing and archery. — HNS

Jitkundo seminar begins

KATHMANDU: The first Jitkundo Seminar and Workshop began here from Saturday. In all, 24 trainers including three from India are taking part in the two-day seminar organised by Nepal Jitkundo Martial Arts Association. Spanish instructor Joaquin Marcelo will conduct the seminar, said the organisers. — HNS
