Three teams on top

LALITPUR: Machhindra Club, Kantipur Club and Far Western Region began the first National Club Team Chess Championships campaign with hundred per cent win here on Wednesday. Surbir Lama, Rijendra Raj Bhandari, Niraj Niraula and Shyam Shrestha helped Machhindra claim all four points against Kantipur Chess Team. Kantipur Club players Fide Master (FM) Manish Hamal, Naveen Tandukar, Uttam Raj Thapa and Rajan Chhetri also all won against Banke Chess Association. Likewise, Tekendra Raj Rajopadhyaya, Keshav Gautam, Dirgha Raj Joshi and Basanta Rawal defeated all four opponents of Bukas Club. Nepal Chess Club of Dolakha earned 3.5 points over Patan Multiple Campus while hosts Himalayan Chess Club ‘A’ and ‘B’ along with Makhan Chess Club also earned three points apiece. — HNS

LA Swimming

KATHMANDU: Little Angels’ (LA) School is organising the 10th LA Inter-school Swimming Championships at its school premises in Hattiban on September 12-13. Around 300 swimmers of 35 schools from around the country will compete for the championships, said the organisers here on Wednesday. Apart from the individual events, teams earning the maximum numbers will be declared the team champions. A youngest swimmer of the tournament will also be honoured, informed the organisers. — HNS

PLA beat Central

KATHMANDU: Eastern Region and People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Club registered wins during the National Men’s and Women’s Volleyball League Championships here on Wednesday. In the women’s section, Eastern Region defeated Far Western Region 25-15, 25-14, 25-22 and PLA laboured to a 27-25, 20-25, 17-25, 25-17, 15-13 win over Central Region. In the men’s section, Employment Creation Services beat Mid Western Region 25-19, 25-15, 25-16 while Central Region rallied from two sets deficit to defeat PLA 223-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-20, 18-16 in a five set thriller. In another match, Jawalakhel Volleyball Training Centre overcame Eastern Region 20-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-18. — HNS

LA, Ace in semi-finals

KATHMANDU: Little Angels’ (LA) School and Ace advanced to the semi-finals of the first Bern Hardt Inter-college Boys Basketball Tournament here on Wednesday. LA saw off Xavier International 47-29 riding on 14 points from Lakpa Sherpa while Sonam Chhopel netted 28 points as Ace edged past Golden Gate ‘B’ 59-47. Also through to the last four were Golden Gate ‘A’ and Prime College. Bikram Dangol scored 31 points as Golden Gate ‘A’ crushed hosts Bern Hardt 60-27 and Prime hammered National Campus 85-35 riding on Ketan Khadka’s 22 points. — HNS

RR Campus triumph

KATHMANDU: Ratna Rajya (RR) Campus claimed the first Nationwide Inter-college Shito-Ryu Karate Tournament here on Wednesday. RR won the team championship after winning 10 gold medals. Second-placed Saraswoti Campus was far behind with just one gold and five silver medals. Shanti Niketan stood third with a gold and two silver medals. Sonam Lama and Saru Pariyar were declared the best male and female players respectively. Chaturbhujeswor Campus of Sarlahi was adjudged the fair-play team. — HNS

Nawalparasi win

KATHMANDU: Nawalparasi clinched the first National Inter-Liaison Forum Men’s Basketball Tournament on Wednesday. Nawalparasi beat Dolkha 67-58 in final. Rajiv Joshi top scored for the winners with 23 points while Karma Gurung and Rajiv Shakya contributed 17 points each for Dolkha. Rajiv was also adjudged the most valuable player of the tournament. Karma Gurung finished as the top scorer of the tournament organised by CPN-UML Jhapa-Kathmandu Liaison Forum. — HNS

Karate tournament

KATHMANDU: Samakhushi Dojo, affiliated with the Nepal Shito-Ryu Karate Association, is organising the fifth Bagmati Zonal Karate and Kickboxing Championships here from Friday. Around 715 players from eight districts, 32 dojos and seven schools will vie for the championships, said the organisers here on Wednesday. Karate tournament features 20 kumite events — 11 in men’s and nine in women’s. Likewise, there will be five weight categories in men’s and three in women’s kickboxing. — HNS
