Suwal, Prajapati triumph

Bhaktapur: Ajay Suwal won the men’s and Rita Prajapati claimed the women’s championships

of the Nationwide Open Table Tennis Tournament organised by Youth Sports Group here on Tuesday. Suwal defeated former national champion Shiva Sundar Gothe and Prajapati overcame Nabita Shrestha with an identical 4-2 sets. Ranjit Singh Rayamajhi and Chandan Shahi finished joint third in the men’s section while Anita Maharjan and Renuka Khatri shared the third spot in the women’s section. Top three winners in both the sections received Rs 8,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 2,000 each respectively. — HNS

Bagh Bahirav advance

KATHMANDU: Bagh Bhairav entered the quarter-finals with a 25-21, 25-15 win over Mt Olive in the Valleywide Inter-school Open Volleyball Tournament organised by Namuna Machhindra Secondary School, here on Tuesday. Bagh Bhairav topped the Group ‘C’ with yet another 25-11, 25-14 win over Pravat School later in the day. Winners between Mt Olive and Pravat will join Bagh Bhairav in the last eight. Anal Jyoti and hosts Namuna are also through to the quarter-finals from Group ‘D’ after both the teams defeated the same opponents Gambhir Samundra Setu. Anal Jyoti overcame Setu 25-9, 25-11 while Namuna saw off Setu 25-13, 25-15. - HNS

LAC, CCRC in semi-finals

KATHMANDU: Little Angels’ College (LAC) and Capital College and Research Centre (CCRC) advanced to the semi-finals of a football tournament held under the second LACM Inter-college Sports Meet on Tuesday. LAC beat Sun Shine College 1-0 on a seventh-minute goal from Summit Shrestha. Sun Shine also reached the last four as runners up to LAC in the group. CCRC crushed Little Angels’ College of Management (LACM) 5-2 and entered the semi-finals as runners up to Golden Gate College. Arun Niraula struck a hat-trick and Rajendra and Laxman Thapa added one goal each for CCRC. Sandharva Shrestha and Akash Sherchan scored for LACM. LAC will meet CCRC and Sun Shine will take on Golden Gate in the semi-finals. In chess tournament, Suraj Shrestha and Santosh Parajuli of Nepal College of Management (NCM), and Prasun Jajodiya of Golden Gate qualified for the men’s semi-final. In the girls’ section, Yashu Shrestha of LACM beat Seema Sharma of NCM and fellow college student Barsha Shrestha. Basketball matches are scheduled for Wednesday. — HNS

TIA through to last four

KATHMANDU: Hosts Trungram International Academy (TIA) and Deep Jyoti School joined Valley Public and Prithvi School in the girls’ semi-finals of the sixth TIA Cup Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Tuesday. Prekshya Malla netted 13 as TIA beat Gillete 39-17 and Deep Jyoti overcame Marsyangdi 19-12 riding on 13 points from Rojina. In boys’ section, Gyan Niketan defeated TIA 44-34; Golden Peak overcame Grand Peak 44-25; Daffodil hammered Himalaya 55-5; Trinity edged past Saptagandaki 21-17; and Learning Realm International beat Greenland 5-36. — HNS
