KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Marathon Pvt Ltd (KMPL) handed over the cash prizes to the winners of last month’s Real third Kathmandu Marathon here today.

Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) athlete Arjun Basnet and Kanchi Maya Koju had won the marathon on September 12. Basnet bagged $5000 while Koju pocketed $3000. Chief of the Army Staff Chhatra Man Singh Gurung, KMPL Chairman Nilendra Raj Shrestha and NRN International Coordination Committee Chairman Upendra Mahato gave away the prizes.

The men’s event was dominated by the armymen after Rajendra Bhandari and last year’s winner Uttam Khatri finished second and third respectively. Bhandari won the double gold medals in 5,000m and 3,000m steeple chase in the 10th South Asian Games but faced one year ban after testing positive in doping.

In the women’s event, Krishneswori Sintakala and Surya Maya Rai ended up second and third. Athletes rounding up in the top 10 in the men’s and women’s marathon also got their shares of prizes. The other events in the Marathon included men’s and women’s half marathon, 5km open race, 5km wheel chair race and 5km race of high school boys and girls. In all, 2013 athletes from 16 countries participated in the event.
