Match-fixing accused footballers released on bail

After a hearing today, Special Court Justices Mohan Raman Bhattarai, Mahesh Kumar Pudasaini and Bhupendra Prasad Rai set a bail of Rs 5,00,00o each for Anjan KC and Ritesh Thapa, Rs 1,50,000 for Sagar Thapa and Rs 50,000 each for Bikash Singh Chhetri and Sandeep Rai today.

Subsequently, the accused footballers deposited the bail for their release.

The Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Range had arrested the footballers from different parts of the Kathmandu Valley on October 14 before the Dashain vacation and presented before the Special Court on October 27.

The Office of the Attorney General on Sunday had registered the subversion case against national team suspended skipper of Nepal's national team Sagar Thapa, his deputy Sandeep Rai, goalkeeper Ritesh Thapa and two former players Anjan KC and Bikash Singh Chhetri at Special Court, as per Section 3.3.1 of the Crime against State and Punishment Act, 1989.

The KMPR had claimed that the footballers received $3,061 to $5,000 from the various matches of Merdeka Cup, Nehru Cup, SAFF Championship, Asian Games and international friendlies from 2008-2014. The ANFA and Asian Football Confederation have provisionally suspended the accused players from football-related activities.
