MoYS suspends NSC veep Sherpa

Kathmandu, August 22

Ministry of Youth and Sports today suspended the Vice-president of National Sports Council Lama Tendi Sherpa.

Minister for Youth and Sports Rajendra Kumar KC took the decision after receiving the letter from Department of Customs. “As Sherpa is facing criminal charges in court, we decided to suspend him from all sports related activities,” KC told The Himalayan Times. “And we have directed the NSC to keep Sherpa away from all sports related activities after the Department of Customs asked us to do so,” added the minister.

Sherpa — who is also the General Secretary of Nepal Olympic Committee and President of Nepal Basketball Association — was arrested from the Tribhuvan International Airport in 2015 on charge of illegally possessing gold. Sherpa was released on bail after he paid the amount of Rs 1.3 million.

Member Secretary of NSC Keshab Kumar Bista said the ministry had instructed the sports governing body to implement the decision. “We have received a letter from MoYS to implement the minister-level decision of keeping our vice-president  Sherpa away from sports-related activities,” said Bista.
