Mixed bag for Nepal in Olympiad

Nepal beat Malta 3-1 to register their second win in the men’s team event of the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan on Tuesday. The women’s team, however, went down 3-1 against Ireland in the fifth round match.

In men’s category, 2017-rated FIDE Master Bilam Lal Shrestha beat 2017-rated Candidate Master Duncan Vella. Shrestha, who was included in the team from second round, have won all four matches.

In other matches, 2013-rated Kshitiz Bhandari defeated 2057-rated Clarence Psaila, while 2034-rated Sajin Maharjan edged past 2151-rated Joseph Gauci. The 2099-rated CM Keshav Shrestha suffered defeat against 2172-rated CM Colin Peace.

Nepal, who beat US Virgin Isles in the third round, have accumulated five points after fifth round. They will play Colombia in the sixth round.

In women’s section, 1574-rated Sindira Joshi played a draw against 1948-rated CM Diana Mirza and 1740-rated CM Monalisa Khamboo shared points with 1781-rated Alice O Gorman. The 1693-rated Shanta Thapa went down to 1766-rated FM Karina Kruk and 1488-rated Sujana Lohani faced defeat against 1795-rated CM Gearoidin Ui.

The women’s team, which has recorded one victory so far, will face Guam in the sixth round.
