MPC win 35th National Athletics Championships

Kathmandu, March 6:

Nirmala Bharati of Nepal Police set a new national record in women’s 10,000m with the timings of 37:21.9 minutes on the final day of the Nepal Investment Bank 35th National Athletics Championships here today.

Bharati broke her own record of 37:48.9 minutes set on September 4, 2005. Kanchi Maya Koju won silver medal completing the race in 37:27.5 minutes excelling the previous national record. Bharati had also set a national record in the half marathon with the timings of 1:20.13 on January 21, as part of the 35th national championships. Bharati, who also bagged 5,000m silver, was declared the best woman athlete of the championships.

Devi Bahadur Basnet of Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) was adjudged the best male athlete. Basnet won three gold medals — 100m, 200m and 4x100m — followed by a silver medal in 400m. Keshari Chaudhary of Mid-Western Region won the emerging star award. Chaudhary won two gold medals in high jump and triple jump followed by a silver in long jump.

Chief coach of the National Athletics Association Narayan Pradhan was named the best coach. Best male and female athletes and the best coach were presented with a cash prize of Rs 10,000 each while Keshari earned Rs 5,000.

Nepal Police won the best team award of Rs 20,000 along with a running shield instituted by Jaya Rajya Laxmi Shah in memory of her husband Captain Bobby Shah. Despite winning less number of gold medals than TAC, Nepal Police topped the table on better points average. TAC won 17 gold while Policemen claimed 14.

On Monday, Aanka Bahadur Thanet of TAC won the men’s hammer throw gold medal. Thanet threw 36.78 metres ahead of Khurshed Ahamed Khan (20.76) and Ujir Singh Bista (20.09), both from Nepal Police.

Pratap Chand of TAC claimed 800m gold with the timings of 1:57.0 minutes followed by Prem Bahadur Mahat (TAC) and Nanda Lal Mahato (Nepal Police) who finished in 1:57.2 and 1:57.9 respectively.

Sabitri Nepali and Bishnu Kafle of Nepal Police bagged women’s 800m gold and silver medals respectively. Nepali finished in 2:22.3 minutes while Kafle came in 2:22.4 minutes. Hari Devi Rajlawat (Central Region) won the bronze with the timings of 2:33.0 minutes.

Gyan Bahadur Bohara and Uttam Khatri of TAC won gold and silver medals in the men’s 5000m. Bohara and Khatri completed the course in 14:53.6 and 15:03.0 minutes respectively. Akkal Bahadur Bohara of APF came third in 16:03.0 minutes.

Nepal Police won the women’s 4x400m gold medal in 4:18.8 minutes followed by Central Region (4:40.4) and Mid-Western Region (4:41.4). TAC claimed the men’s 4x100m gold with the timing of 3:25.3 minutes while Nepal Police (3:27.2) and APF (3:37.6) finshed second and third respectivley.
