Murray, Ferrero, Baghdatis advance

Marseille, February 13:

Andy Murray of Britain, Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain, and Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus won in straight sets on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Open 13.

Fourth-seeded Murray needed only 72 minutes to beat Dutch qualifier Jesse Huta Galung 6-4, 6-4 while No 5 Ferrero landed 70 per cent of his first serves to defeat Lee Hyung-taik of South Korea 6-4, 6-1.

Baghdatis slammed 10 aces and converted one break point in each set to overcome 2006 winner Arnaud Clement of France 6-3, 6-4. The sixth-seeded Cypriot, who lost in the final last year against unseeded Gilles Simon of France, will next face either Feliciano Lopez of Spain or Ivo Karlovic of Croatia.

Murray will play Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, who outlasted Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Ferrero will meet Nicolas Mahut of France, who did not face a single break point to cruise past Russian qualifier Michail Elgin 6-3, 6-3.

Also on Tuesday, Julien Benneteau ousted Romania’s Andrei Pavel, who retired in the second set because of a back injury. The Frenchman was leading 6-2, 1-0. Russian qualifier Teimuraz Gabashvili edged out Michael Berrer of Germany 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Brasil open

Costa do Sauipe: Former world No 3 Guillermo Coria tasted victory on the ATP tour for the first time in 19 months at the Brasil Open on Tuesday.

Coria defeated Italian qualifier Francesco Aldi 6-4, 7-5 in the first round, enjoying his first win since July 2006. He quit the tour a month later after the 2006 US Open because of struggles with his serve and confidence. Problems with his right shoulder sidelined him until the end of last year when he played in two challengers. The nine-time winner on the tour and former French Open finalist has a protected ranking of 105, good for nine months or eight tournaments.

His serve was still a problem on Tuesday — Coria double-faulted 16 times and lost his serve five times, but broke Aldi eight times to prevail in the nearly two-hour match. At least Coria was better off than three seeds. No 3 Igor Andreev, No 4 Potito Starace and No 6 Agustin Calleri all lost their first-round matches.

Calleri had reached the quarter-finals or better in his previous five appearances here, but he was undone by fellow Argentine Sergio Roitman 6-3, 6-2. Andreev lost to Argentine qualifier Eduardo Schwank 6-3, 6-2, and Starace was defeated by Czech Ivo Minar 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
