Nadal makes it 32 in a row; Mirza advances to quarter-finals

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal ran his clay-court winning streak to 32 matches by topping the Czech Tomas Zib 6-2, 6-1 to move into the semi-finals of the Mercedes Cup. The French Open champion, chasing his sixth straight title on clay, ended the match in 70 minutes against the 54th-ranked Zib. Nadal now plays Finn Jarkko Niemenen, who beat Italy’s Andreas Seppi 6-2, 6-3. Nikolay Davydenko of Russia also reached the semis beating Czech Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-2.

RCA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS: Two-time defending champion Andy Roddick recorded his 12th consecutive victory at the RCA Championships, advancing into the quarter-finals. Top-seeded Roddick, who beat Israel’s Noam Okun, 6-3, 6-3, joined No 4-seed Taylor Dent, Robby Ginepri and Paul Goldstein. Dent defeated Germany’s Bjorn Phau 6-2, 6-2; Ginepri upset Paradorn Srichaphan 6-0, 6-4; and Goldstein beat Giovanni Lapentti of Ecuador 6-3, 6-2. In the third-round matches, Nicolas Kiefer of Germany, Karol Beck of Slovakia and Greg Rusedski of Britain won.

Cincinnati Open

MASON: Vera Zvonareva was upset by Japan’s Akiko Morigami 6-3, 6-2 in the Cincinnati Women’s Open. Morigami will meet India’s Sania Mirza in the quarter-finals of the $170,000 Tier III tournament. Mirza defeated Puerto Rico’s Kristina Brandi 7-6, 7-5. Jelena Jankovic of Serbia also advanced with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Austrian Sybille Bammer.
