NBA Bulls squander 35-point lead in loss to Kings
CHICAGO: Chicago squandered a 35-point lead and lost to Sacramento 102-98 on Monday, the Bulls being outscored 9-3 by Sacramento rookie Tyreke Evans over the game's final 2:13 to complete the humiliating collapse.
Bulls fans booed the team off the court after the worst blown lead in an NBA loss since Denver led Utah by 36 points and lost in 1996.
Britain's Luol Deng scored a game-high 26 points and Derrick Rose added 24 for Chicago while France's Joakim Noah had 10 points and 10 rebounds in a losing cause.
Chicago surged ahead by as much as 79-44 with 3:10 elapsed in the third quarter before the Kings began the comeback which gave them a two-game road win streak for the first time since early in 2008.
Over the last 20 minutes and 50 seconds, the Kings hit 21-of-39 shots from the field and kept the Bulls to just 5-of-26 shooting.
"This one stings," Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro said. "You have to execute. We got a little complacent. It hurts. But what are you going to do, sit there with your head down? No. This is the NBA. You have to keep going."
The Kings closed the third quarter with a 19-5 run, pulling within 88-69, and then Ime Udoka, whose father is from Nigeria, scored 15 of Sacramento's next 22 points over 9:32 to trim Chicago's lead to 95-91.
That set the stage for Evans, who converted a 3-point play and then after a Deng free throw, converted another 3-point play to give Sacramento a 97-96 lead, their first advantage since the opening minutes.
Evans followed with a jumper to stretch the Kings' lead but Rose added two free throws to trim the Bulls' deficit to 99-98.
Evans answered with another free throw but Rose missed a game-tying layup and Slovenia's Beno Udrih sank two free throws for the final points.
