Nepal confirm seven medals at SA Games

The second day of the 10th South Asian Games saw Nepali players confirming at least seven medals here today.
The badminton teams and women’s table tennis team entered the semi-finals confirming at least three bronze medals while four wushu players were drawn directly into the last four after Afghanistan withdrew from the event at the last moment.
The men’s badminton team of Balram Thapa, Pashupati Paneru, Indra Mahata, Anil Kumar Lakhe and Ram Singh Chaudhary defeated Maldives 5-0 in the quarter-finals, while the women’s team of singles bronze medallist Sumina Shrestha, Sara Devi Tamang, Samjhana Khaling, Nary Thapa and Sujana Shrestha advanced to the last four beating Maldives in the quarter-finals.
Bal Ram defeated Hassan Afsheen 21-11, 21-19; Pashupati beat Nasheen Sharafuddin 21-7, 21-9; Ram Singh outplayed Mohamed Ajfan 21-16, 21-9; the duo of Balram and Pashupati defeated Ibrahim Shamiv and Nasheev Sharafuddin 21-10, 21-14 in first doubles; and Ram Singh and Indra outplayed Hassan Afsheen and Mohamed Maujood 21-14, 21-13 for a clean sweep in men’s team event.
Pakistan also made it to the men’s team event semi-finals beating Bangladesh 4-1.
The women’s table tennis team entered the semi-finals as runner-up from Group I. The Nepali team of Muna Basukala, Sandhya Shakya, Gita Thapa Magar, Swetcha Nembang and Rita Prajapati beat Maldives 3-1 in the league round to secure semi-final berth. India defeated both Nepal and Maldives to make it to the semi-finals as the group toppers.
In wushu, Raj Kumar Rasaili, Beg Bahadur Pandey, Shyam Bista and Dhanbir Maharjan were drawn directly into the semi-finals of the san-shou event. The wushu players will begin their campaign tomorrow.
In squash, Hira Thapa of Nepal defeated Bhola Chauhan and entered the second round.
