Nepal suffer four-wicket defeat to Scotland in WC Qualifiers
KATHMANDU: Nepal suffered a four-wicket defeat at the hands of Scotland in the ongoing ICC World Cup Qualifiers at the Queen Sports Club in Bulawayo on Thursday.
Nepal won the toss and chose to bat before making a total of 149 runs losing all the wickets in 47.4 overs. In reply, Scotland reached to 153-6 in 41.3 overs.
Winless Nepal remains in fourth place of Group B and now they are in need of two wins from their last two matches to be played against Afghanistan and Hong Kong, to secure their berth in super-six. Nepal will face Afghanistan on Saturday and Hong Kong two days later.
With the third win in the Qualifiers, Scotland leads the table with six points while hosts Zimbabwe are in second with four points earned from two matches.
Meanwhile, Nepal made a disastrous start to the innings as their opening duo Gyanendra Malla and Dilip Nath were dismissed with just one and four runs respectively.
Captain Paras Khadka who came to bat at third number tried to lay the foundation smashing 63 runs facing 75 delievries but other middle-order batsmen failing to add significant runs put Nepal under the pressure.
Young batsmen Dipendra Singh Airee and Aarif Sheikh were out for one and two runs respectively while experienced Sharad Vesawkar was dismissed for a duck.
Sompal Kami and Rohit Kumar Paudel tried to rescue the innings scoring 18 and 15 runs respectively while unbeaten Basant Regmi was one of the four Nepali batsmen to touch double digit figure as he added 24 runs.
Likewise, Sandeep Lamichhane and Lalit Rajbanshi contributed six and four runs respectively.
Stuart Whittingham was pick of the Scottish bowling as he took three wickets for the winning side and he was supported by Safyaan Sharif and Alasdair Evans who added two wickets each. Likewise, Richie Berrington and Tom Sole bagged one wicket each.
Meanwhile, Unbeaten Kyle Coetzer smashed 136-ball 88 which was crucial for his team to earn an important victory over Nepal. Scottish captain's half-century included three sixes and seven boundaries. Likewise other opener Matthew Cross contributed 14 runs facing 28 deliveries.
Calum Macleod (15), George Munsey (10) and Craig Wallace (17) were other notable contributors for Scottish side.
Basant Regmi and Sandeep Lamichhane claimed two wickets each for Nepal while lalit Rajbanshi and Dipendra Singh Airee added one wicket each.
