NOC announces Olympic squad

Kathmandu, July 19:

Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) announced a 30-member Nepali contingent for the August 8-24 Beijing Olympic Games here on Saturday.

Vice-president of the NOC and National Sports Council Sitaram Maskey will be Nepal’s Chief-de-mission.

Among the players are taekwondo ace Deepak Bista, athletes Arjun Kumar Basnet and Chandrakala Thapa, swimmers Karishma Karki and Prasiddha Jung Shah, shooter Fulmaya Kyapchhaki, judo player Debu Thapa and weighlifter Kamal Bahadur Adhikari. Bista is the only player to qualify for the Games, while others received wild cards.

Among the coaches are Puspa Raj Ojha (athletics), Pradeep Khati (shooting), Birendra Ranjit (Judo), Kwon Hyouk Joung (taekwondo), Deep Raj Gurung (taekwondo) and Partha Sarathi Sen Gupta (weightlifting). Swimming is the only sport which does not have coach for the Olympic Games, but the NOC have included General Secretary of Nepal Swimming Association, Ashok Bajracharya in the Nepal’s squad.

Other officials are NOC president Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan, general secretary Jeevan Ram Shrestha, Umesh Lal Shrestha, Ravi Raj Thapa, Upendra Keshari Neupane, Sunil Rajkarnikar, Hukum Raj Giri, Gita Rana, Chhimi Urgen Gurung, Sujan Lal Shrestha and Laxman Shrestha.

Rajyan Ram Shrestha and Nancy Lama have been picked up for the Olympic Youth Camp.

Dr Saroj Kumar Shrestha will represent as the Nepali medical staff. The names of the government representatives are yet to be finalised, said the NOC general Secretary Jeevan Ram Shrestha.
