NOC seeks govt help

Kathmandu, March 31

Nepal Olympic Committee President Jeevan Ram Shrestha today asked the government to provide security and create favourable environment to carry out daily works from his Lalitpur-based building.

Shrestha said that an authorised group had captured the building with the help of Ministry of Home Affairs and that they were hapless in conducting the Olympic movement in the country. The NOC request came after the International Olympic Committee and Olympic Council of Asia reiterated their support to Shrestha-led committee.

In a letter sent to NOC President Shrestha and Secretary General Lama Tendi Sherpa on March 28, the IOC and OCA have said: “It is with great concern that the IOC and OCA have learned of the recent developments affecting your NOC and the occupation of your NOC office by a group of persons from a so-called “parallel body” not recognised by the IOC/OCA. The IOC and OCA firmly condemn these actions which go against the principles and rules that govern the Olympic Movement.”

A group of Rukma Shumsher Rana-led NOC — which had been aiming to take over the NOC building since the Supreme Court ruled in their favour five years ago — had locked the building on January 21 and has acquired the NOC property on March 21.

The IOC/OCA letter further added: “The sole IOC-recognised NOC in Nepal, currently led by you, must be reinstated with immediate effect in its office and continue to perform its activities in accordance with the Olympic Charter. The other group/so-called “parallel body” must cease, with immediate effect, any illegal/unauthorised use of IOC/Olympic/NOC exclusive properties.”

The letter further stated that “a peaceful and constructive dialogue shall be established between your NOC, this group and the government authorities concerned to resolve this long-standing dispute once and for all.”

Shrestha informed that the letter had been forwarded to Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Youth and Sports and National Sports Council as instructed by the international bodies. He also asked the Rana-led faction to hand over the NOC building to his committee and sit for talks.
