Kathmandu, May 5

The first edition of the Pepsi Open Golf Tournament is beginning here at the Royal Nepal Golf Club on Friday.

Around 100 golfers are expected to participate in the first edition of the tournament that features five categories – men, women, senior, super senior and junior. “This is the first ever tournament sponsored by Pepsi in its history,” said RNGC Captain NK Rai. “And Pepsi has also planned an international tournament next year to mark the centenary celebration of our club,” added Rai. Junior golfers will play their rounds on Friday, while others are scheduled to compete on Saturday.

Territory Development Manager of Pepsi, Nishi K Lama said the sponsorship was a part of their involvement in sports. “We are associated with many sports events worldwide and we are continuing our tradition,” said Lama. “This tournament is just the beginning and we are planning a mega event next year. We are in learning phase and this event will help us to make our upcoming tournament a grand success,” he added.

Vice-president of RNGC Tashi Ghale thanked Pepsi for the support. “Pepsi coming into golf is a good sign. This sponsorship is important for the golfing fraternity as it will be a great help in the overall development of the sport,” said Ghale. “We are happy that Pepsi has agreed to involve in our 100 years celebrations.”
