Player profile: TASHI GHALE

Top Nepali amateur golfer, Tashi Ghale was born in 1960 in the heart of the Annapurna ranges in Manang. The villagers at Manang had one peculiar characteristic — they would all migrate once a year to Kathmandu to avoid the treacherous chill of the Himalayan ranges.

During the course, Tashi’s father started handicraft business setting up a small one room office in Kathmandu. Tashi, always a trend setter, diversified soon enough and before anybody knew, he was dealing in used cars, importing them from Japan and Germany and selling them at a profit.

At about this time, Ghale also had a hotel in Kathmandu — Hotel Thamel. He later planned big and that was how the Royal Singhi came about. Tashi was a soccer player — he played for Nepal from 1974 to 1986. One of his most memorable moments was beating the Maldives at the Asian Club Championship football in 1985. He scored one of the six goals that day.

Tshering Sherpa, a close friend of Ghale, introduced golf to him in 1986 just when his football career was in its twilight. Tshering took Ghale to the RNGC where he handed Ghale a nine-iron and a handfull of balls to practice.

Ghale remembers hitting his first ever golf ball flush in the middle sending it flying 80 yards. Known today as a powerful hitter of the golf ball, he settled for coaching before actually taking the game head-on.

Today, Ghale is actively involved with the Nepal Golf Association as Vice President.
