Prime vie for clean sweep

KATHMANDU: Hosts Prime College have kept their hopes of clinching double titles alive after both their teams — girls and boys — made it to the finals here at the seventh Prime Cup U-19 (+2) Basketball Championships here today.

Played at the National Sports Council covered hall, Prime dominated the overall match and registered a comprehensive 47-16 win over National Campus in the girls’ section. Diwa Shree Malla was the standout performer, posting 20 points alone for the hosts. Prime took a huge 14-0 lead in the first quarter and maintained their lead till the end. In the second quarter they scored 19 against four of the National leaving the first half score 33-4. National put some resistance in the next two quarters with the scores of 4-4 and 7-10 but that was not enough to stop Prime from going into the final.

Prime will now take on White House for the championship after the latter outplayed Xavier International 29-6 riding on Sami Tamang’s 11 points. White House maintained their lead throughout the match with 10-1, 9-0, 4-2 and 6-3 in the respective four quarters.

Prime were dominant in the boys’ section semi-finals as well as they eased past the Ullens School 54-28. Collecting 20 and 15 points against a total 14 of the Ullens’ in the first two quarters was enough for Prime to book their place in the final. Prime netted 13 and six while giving away nine and five points to Ullens in the last two quarters. Deepak Pun top scored with 13 points for Prime.

Title favourites Golden Gate ‘A’ will take on Prime in final. In the last semi-final of the day, Golden Gate ‘A’ defeated their second string team ‘B’ 61-39. Golden Gate ‘B’ fought hard in the final quarter and scored 19 against 14 but it made little difference to the final score. Vikram Dangol netted 18 points for the winning team.
