RCT book quarter-final berth

KATHMANDU: Ranipokhari Corner Team (RCT) reached the British Gurkha Cup quarter-finals defeating Boys Union Club 2-0 today.

RCT earned six points from two matches in Group ‘B’. “We qualified for the quarter-finals but we would still play for win against Three Star,” said RCT coach Madhu Karki.

In another match in the same Group, Surendra Tamang scored five and newly appointed skipper Pradeep Maharjan added four as Nabil Three Star Club showered Mid and Far Western Region-XI with 11 goals to nil. Three Star, who were held by Boys Union in their first match, have four points.

After a lacklustre first half, Dipak Rai struck in the 62nd minute for RCT, beating a lone defender and goalie Dasharath Adhikari. Boys Union’s hopes of comeback vanished soon after substitute Saresh Shrestha added the second in the 90th minute.

Boys Union were a much improved team in the second half but failed to find the back of the net. Tanka Basnet delivered a sublime cross to unmarked Shekhar Limbu in the 58th minute but the player failed to capitalise the chance. Dipesh Thapa Magar also came closer to scoring for RCT but his powerful shot reflected from bar in 76th minute.

Earlier, Three Star were right on the target when Vijay Gurung converted a powerful shot in 10th minute. Surendra then opened his account

in the 22nd minute with a powerful strike from

20 yards. Five minutes

later Pradeep scored

from a tight angle to

make it 3-0 and Tamang added his second in the 44th minute.

Santosh Sahukhala joined the goal scoring spree in the 47th minute before Pradeep utilised a cross from Anjan KC to add his second. Surendra then completed his hat trick six minutes later finishing a cross from Nishan Rai. Surendra headed home his fourth in the 75th and scored his fifth in the 80th minute. Pradeep also completed his hat-trick, heading home a cross from Anjan KC in the 84th. The midfielder completed the rout with his fourth goal a minute later.
