Real eliminated from Copa del Rey

Madrid, January 17:

Spanish league champion Real Madrid could find no way past Mallorca goalkeeper Miguel Moya and conceded a late goal to lose 1-0 and be eliminated from the Copa del Rey on Wednesday.

Real Madrid, already facing a 2-1 deficit from the first leg, lost 3-1 on aggregate. It hasn’t won the Copa del Rey since 1993. Mallorca advanced to the quarter-finals along with Getafe, Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Racing Santander, Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao. On Tuesday, FC Barcelona drew 0-0 with defending champion Sevilla to advance on away goals.

Italian Cup

ROME: Francesco Totti came off the bench to score two goals and lead AS Roma to a 4-0 victory over Torino, sending it to the Italian Cup quarter-finals.

Totti entered in the 59th minute and tapped in a pass from Ludovic Giuly two minutes later. He then converted a penalty in the 73rd. Giuly helped Roma to a 14th-minute lead, feeding Mancini and completed the scoring in the 89th, enabling Roma to overcome Torino’s 3-1 first-leg victory.

Roma advanced along with Palermo, Fiorentina and Sampdoria. Catania drew 1-1 with AC Milan to move on and eliminate the perennial Italian power.

FA Cup

LONDON: Newcastle beat Stoke 4-1 on Wednesday in the English FA Cup while non-league Havant and Waterlooville beat Swansea 4-2 to set up a fourth-round meeting with Liverpool.

Newcastle drew 0-0 against Stoke two weeks ago but won its replay against the visiting League Championship side through goals by Michael Owen, Claudio Cacapa, James Milner and Damien Duff.

Also Wednesday, Manchester City beat Premier League rival West Ham 1-0, and League Two club Hereford ousted Tranmere 1-0.
